Omusinga Mumbere Returns to Rwenzururu After Five Months Abroad

The Omusinga of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu Kingdom, Charles Mumbere, has made an emotional return to his Kingdom after more than five months away, delighting hundreds of jubilant subjects across the Rwenzori region.

The King had traveled to Turkey in October last year for specialized medical review, a journey that kept him away from his ancestral home for months. Although he returned to Uganda in December, he remained at his residence in Kampala, recuperating away from the public.

His eventual return to the Rwenzori region was met with unmatched excitement and cultural pride. At Rugendabara, the border point between Bunyangabu and Kasese districts, hundreds of loyal subjects gathered to welcome him, with traditional drums beating loudly and cultural dancers performing in a vibrant display of loyalty and heritage.

The royal convoy proceeded to Hima, where more supporters had assembled in anticipation, maintaining an electric atmosphere filled with relief and admiration as the Omusinga acknowledged greetings from his people.

At Kisanyarazi, the final stop before the town, celebrations reached a peak, with songs of praise filling the air as subjects reaffirmed their bond with the King. He was then escorted to his palace in Kasese, marking his official return, before addressing a large crowd at Rwenzori Square eager to hear from him after months of absence.

The Omusinga expressed gratitude for the warm reception and shared insights from his medical trip. “We were treated with great respect in Turkey. When the doctors learned that we were royalty, they handled us with utmost care and dignity,” he said.

He also thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and government officials for facilitating the long-awaited medical review. “I thank the President and the government for allowing me to go for medical review after a long time,” he added.

The King noted that routine medical check-ups had been impossible since the 2016 incident that led to his incarceration alongside more than 100 royal guards. “For years, we were unable to access routine medical care as we used to. This opportunity was important for my health and well-being,” he remarked.

His return marks not only a personal milestone in his recovery but also a moment of renewed unity and hope for the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu Kingdom.
